Well I got my internet yesterday, and I have a LOT of things to update on: #1) Classes--of course MTH 347 (Differential Equations, ie Diff EQ) - This class seems really easy so far. We took our first little quiz on Friday, and I feel quite confident that I did well. I am just worried that I forgot to write the multiplyer (scalar) for the second problem, and that will be a point off. We are still working on slope fields (OLD STUFF!!!!!) It doesn't seem like it is going to be a horribly difficult class. I like the teacher, Dr. Olga Brezhneva. She grew up in Moscow, and you can tell from the accent, but she is REALLY nice. I shouldn't have ANY problems in this class. MTH 425 (Number Theory) - The Prof, Bruce Magurn, is pretty cool. He seems willing to help, and is just a little old man. So far we are still going over stuff that I learned in MTH 422 last year, and some other stuff that I already learned on my own, independent, readings. We have to do a project in the class, where we proof something. I don't know what I am going to do yet. This should be an interesting class. ECO 311 (Econometrics) - Interesting class. I can't really say much about it, it seems a bit early to really say whether or not Dr. Fletcher is going to be good or not. I have heard some bad things about her, but at the same time I have heard that she is actually a nice person, just make sure you read the book carefully because most of her test is in the book, and not in her lecture. ECO 317 (Intermediate Macroeconomics) - Dr. Prosper Raynold is stuck in London due to Hurricane Dean. Thus he e-mailed everyone in the class, and said to read chpts. 1 & 2. Our first class will be this Tuesday. SPN 202 (Spanish) - Out of all of my classes, this is the one that I am worried about the most. I don't know how this is going to work. I have forgotten SO MUCH about Spanish. I feel very uncomfortable about this test that is going to be coming up here very soon. PHS 130.M (Tennis) - CAKE CLASS!!!!!!!!! The only problem with this class is that I have to drive to Hamilton twice a week so that I can take it, but it gets me out of Oxford, and the annoying people that seem to populate this campus. The class is supposed to be from 4-5:40, but on Wednesday we left before 5 because it was OVER 100 out on the courts. We are FRYING DOWN HERE!!!!! #2) Job I GOT A NEW JOB!!!!! I am still going to be in the food court, but not nearly as much as I was before. I am going to be grading papers for a Calculus section in the Math dept. (as if calculus would be taught anywhere else). I love it. I also get to hold office hours, and review sessions. I'll be there something like 7-10 hours a week. I already got (and graded) my first papers. Needless to say I am dissapointed. These kids are in MTH 153 instead of MTH 151. The difference is that MTH 151 students are coming into calculus fresh, with no experience in it whatsoever. MTH 153 students claim to have taken calculus in high school, but didn't get credit on the AP test. So my kids should (at the very least) be near experts on the early (easy) stuff. The test was simple (straight out of their homework problems), and they were still not doing well. Half of them were trying to divide by 0!!!!!! By now they should know that dividing by 0 creates a black hole. 0/0 doesn't equal 0!!!!!!!!!!!! Then, they were told specifically to do something by the teacher. To write the Domain of the function, if they did not do that they lost a point. Only a handful of them actually did it. Also they didn't want to keep writing the limit sign. (LIM x*arrow*1). They should know better than to do that. They take off points on the AP test, thus I should take off points if you do it now. I had a few people who got both of the answers correct, but then ended up with a 6 out of 10 because they dropped the limits and didn't write the domain on both problems. The class average was dismal (less than 6.5 out of 10) This saddens me. This is all for now. I have a bunch more to update on. I'll update later (perhaps) |
